These words are synonymous, but do not always work in similar contexts. Examples:

"I located the light switch which was situated to the left of the door."

"The army is situated in the valley located to the north of the city."

"I located my keys."

"I situated my keys by the front door." Although this is grammatically correct it is rather odd sounding. I believe most people would say "I placed my keys..."

In all, "located" is a much more commonly used word in everyday (American) English. Most often you can use "located" instead of "situated" without the sentence sounding odd. This is not true for the reverse.
