Longitudes and Latitudes:

  • Latitudes are imaginary lines that have been drawn from the center of the earth in west to east direction or east to west direction. But, longitudes are imaginary lines which have been drawn from the center of earth while joining North pole to the South pole or South pole to North pole.
  • Latitudes are also called latitudinal lines and these lines are drawn to the angular distance from center of earth in the west to east or east to west direction. These lines are parallel to each other. The 0° latitude passes through center of the earth and divides earth to two halves. The 0° latitude is also called as Great Circle. It is used to find the location of a place on earth.
  • Longitude is also called longitudinal lines and these lines are drawn to the angular distance from the center of earth from the north pole to south pole or from south pole to north pole. Unlike latitudes, these lines are not circular but semicircular. The 0° longitude passes through London and is called as Prime Meridian. It is used in calculating time zones and international datelines.
