Navratri is a Hindu festival which celebrates the nine avatars of Goddess Durga. It is said that Navratri is the celebration of the victory of Maa Durga, the nine days that we fast and celebrate enthusiastically actually signify the war that lasted for nine days between Goddess and a demon. While Goddess Durga was fighting with Mahishasur, Lord Vishnu's avatar and Hindu God Lord Rama was fighting Ravana to get his wife Devi Sita back.

According to an article in The Speaking Tree, Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga. It is believed that before starting the big war with the king of Lanka, he took blessings from Durga.A priest suggested Lord Rama to offer 100 lotuses to the Goddess but he could only find ninety-nine, hence he presented one of his eyes to her. Devi got pleased by his devotion and blessed him.

Dussehra or Vijayadashmi is the tenth day of Navratri when the festivities almost come to an end. People burn the mighty Lankan King Ravana to mark the end of all evil things and emergence of good and positive vibes. The day marks an end to the Ramlila acts and plays take place almost everywhere. It is one of the most celebrated festivals. Different people from all sections of the society come forward to make it a big success.
The day holds huge significance, as it was this day when Lord Rama killed the ten-headed Ravana. After that, he returned to his home. After getting his wife back, Lord Rama returned home and the day when he reached Ayodhya is celebrated as Diwali. It falls on the fifteenth day of the Hindu month of Kartik. We also call it the festival of lights.
