THE NIJ : -

Under the system of nij the planter produced indigo by directly employing hired labourers in the lands which were directly in his control . Sometimes he bought the land and some times he rented from other zamindars .

RYOTI : -

Under the ryoti system the planter forced the village headman to sign a contract popularly known as Satta on behalf of the ryots . According to this contract the ryots who signed the contract got cash advances at low rates of interest to produce indigo from the planters . In return the ryot had to cultivate indigo on at least 25 per cent of the area under his holding . After harvesting the crop was given to the planter , a new cash loan was given to the ryots and the cycle of loans started again . This system was very harsh .
