Nitrifying bacteria are responsible for conversion of ammonia to nitrite 1st & then nitrate during ‘d’ process of N2 fixation………Whereas denitrifying bacteria are responsible for convertibg ‘nitrate’ back again to atmocpheric N2. Hope it helps!

Nitrifying bacteria fix nitrogen from ammonia. Denitrifying bacteria brekdown nitrogen compounds(eg. nitrates) to atmospheric nitrogen. Nitrogen fixing bacteria produce nitrogen compounds from atmospheric nitrogen.
