Sheet erosion: When the top layer of the soil is removed over a large area by the running water it is called a sheet erosion.

Gully erosion : This is the third stage of sheet erosion with further erosion of the soil, the rills may deepen and become enlarged, and are ultimately turned into guillies. The main cause of gully erosion is the removal of vegetation, particularly of trees with their withspread binding roots. Gully erosion cut on agricultural land and the entire area may be turned into a Badland topography .Gully erosion is also responsible for the formation of Ravines.

Gully erosion is more damage causing problem.

Answer:

Sheet erosion=It is the removal of the top layer soil by running water is known as sheet erosion.

Gully erosion=When rain fall more heavily then the flow off storm water find its way in down hill and create cuts, cracks and trenches and make them unfit for cultivation.

Hence Gully erosion is more damaging than sheet erosion.

Explanation:

  • Population explosion, industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, overgrazing, shifting agriculture and mining activities are the major causes of degradation of land resources.
  • Apart from these, traditional agriculture based on chemical fertilizers and pesticides is also a major cause of land degradation. With the advent of Green Revolution, indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides to increase agricultural production has not only polluted the environment, but also there has been a continuous decline in the population of microorganisms that increase the fertility of the soil, which has resulted in a steady decline in the yield power of the soil has decreased.
  • Degradation of important resource like land is a serious problem before the country. Therefore, solving this problem is the need of the hour.
  • If this is not done, then in the near future the rate of food production will decline in the country, as a result economic development will be stunted and there will be an unprecedented increase in the death rate due to hunger and malnutrition in India with a population of 125 crores.
  • Although today the total food grain production capacity of the country has increased more than five times as compared to 1950 (about 51 million tonnes) (about 259 million tonnes).
