Solid: atoms/particles are held together firmly, uniformly and tightly packed, with definite shape and volume. This is for the coldest temperatures. Liquid: Fills shape of container, atoms/particles are held together, but less tightly, strongly and uniformly, so they can move about. They have definite volume, but not shape, so they fill the shape of their container (making them fluid) The is for the most moderate (between hottest and coldest) temperatures. Gases: Atoms/particles move freely, occupying whole capacity of container, the forces that would hold them together are weak compared to forces that keep them apart, so they are not significantly attracted to each other. They have no defined shape or volume, so can be kept under high or low pressures. This is for the hottest of temperatures.
