Although stay and live both are verbs, they are used to mean differently.
We use live for is a place where someone resides permanently.
I used to live in a rented house before I moved to my own apartment.
On the other hand, we use stay for a place where someone stays temporarily.
I stayed at my sister’s house last weekend to baby sit her ailing son.

staying is being at a particular place for some limited time but living is something existing forever.
