\underline{\bf{\red{Objective\: complement :}}}

Some transitive verbs need a complement even though they have an object. The sentences remain incomplete if there is no complement and even though the verb has an object.

For eg.

  • The council elected Prashant Pradhan president.

The council elected Prashant Pradhan doesn't make complete sense even though it has an object. So, we add the word, president as a complement so that the meaning is complete. This is called objective complement.

\underline{\bf{\blue{Subjective \: complement:}}}

An intransitive verb that requires a word or a phrase to complete its meaning is called verb of incomplete predication. The words or word used to make complete sense are are called complement of verb.

Example of Subjective complement :-

  • The boy appears unhappy.
  • Tanvi is a good singer.

The complements unhappy and a good singer tell us something about the subjects and hence are called subjective complements.
