Non metals have more than 4 electrons in their valence shell. So they can gain electrons easily. These elements and those to the right of them are nonmetals. Elements just to the left of the line may be termed metalloids or semimetals and have properties intermediate between those of the metals and nonmetals.

  • Lose Electrons to Form Postive ions in Nature .
  • React with dilute acid to liberate Hydrogen gas .
  • Generally metal oxides are basic in nature .

Non Metals :

  • Gain electrons to form negative ions .
  • Do not react with dilute acids .
  • Generally non metal oxides or acidic in nature .
