What is the difference between the following: Rocky desert - Stony desert.
Answers
Sandy desert is that type with miles of sand dunes, the surface of which shows ripples. The Namib or mid Sahara are good examples. There are no roads through these areas because the sand dunes move covering and overwhelming all structures in their paths. Camels and very good guides use the sun, moon and stars to navigate their "caravans" between oasis. The terrain is too harsh for wildlife, plants find it hard to get rooted and animals get easily exhausted in the soft sand.
- Stony desert looks a lot like the Martian surface. Australia's Northern Territory, the Kalahari or lower Atacama deserts are good examples. The surface is scattered with stones and small rocks. Since the ground is solid and stable (unlike sandy desert) bushes, tufts of grass and some animals may be present.
- Rocky desert is that where sand and stone were washed or blown away. This is usually associated with very hilly or mountainous terrain exposing very hard rocky material. An example would be the upper Atacama desert or parts of the US states of Arizona and Utah. Some adapted wildlife also exists.
