Our sources on Mahajanapadas are far from satisfactory as of now, the reason being Writing was not developed in India during this era. This makes any extensive commentary on their polity or society next to impossible, at least with the current available sources.

The lack of script is the reason why there are no texts written by either Buddha or Mahavira, though both were Princes ! All we have are their sermons. Similar is the case of Persians during this era and their Zoroastrian tradition.

What precious little information we have are from the Vedas, Jain & Buddhist Traditions, which during this era were orally transmitted, and got written much later probably near Mauryan era with the development of the written language.
