Along the course of river,several smaller rivers join the main river.they are called tributaries. The channels into which a main river breaks up are called distributaries .Hope this is useful and please mark me as brainiest.

Small rivers which join the main river are called tributary.
When the main river distribute or divide into many small rivers these small rivers are called distributary. 
For example yamuna,kosi,son betwa are the tributaries of river ganga and bhagirathi,hooghly are the distributaries of ganga.
