The brain stem is made up of the Medulla, the Pons and the Midbrain. The medulla relays motor and sensory impulses between the brain and spinal cord. It helps to regulate heart beat, breathing (the pons helps this too), blood vessel size, swallowing, vomiting, coughing, sneezing etc. Basically the medulla is just one section of the brain stem.
