A major is what the college awards a degree to you for.

I majored in Aero-Astro engineering as an undergraduate at MIT and earned a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering.

I also took a series of courses in history, political science and economics so I added a minor in social sciences to my degree.

However, no one really knows or cares what your Minor is. It is for your personal edification and is used to assist you in your future career.

Since aero-astro is an engineering Business, it is nice to understand the economics that will affect a business, and to understand the history and politics that affects contract awards in that business.

Thus a Major is what you use to later pursue a graduate degree and to get a job and to launch a career. A minor is what may assist you along the way.
