Fertilization is the fusion of male and female gametes to form zygote, it can take place either externally or internally:
- The fertilization that occurs in organsims externally and not inside them, is termed as external fertilization.
- E.g. Frogs: During sexual reproduction in Frogs the female frog releases thousands of eggs and male frog releases millions of sperm in the water. This results in fertilization of the gametes outside the female body
Whereas,
- The Internal fertilization takes place within the body of an organsims (generally, in female) and not outside.
- E.g. Humans: During sexual reproduction in humans, the sperms from the males goes into the female's body during sex or intercourse and results in formation of Zygote
