The Doctrine of Lapse was introduced by Lord Dalhousie , The Governor General from 1848 to 1856 . It stated that a kingdom could be annexed by the British if the king died without a male heir.

Many kingdoms that were annexed were : - Satara ( 1848 ) , Sambalpur ( 1850 ) , Udaipur ( 1852 ) , Nagpur ( 1853 , Jhansi ( 1854 ) , and Awadh ( 1956)
