The phloem transports water soluble sap that is rich in sugars produced during photosynthesis to those parts of the plant that are non-photosynthetic. In other words, the flow of direction is from the area of production or storage of carbohydrates to areas where they are used. These parts of a plant where the sap is used can either be its roots or storage structures like bulbs or tubers.

Apart from the sugars that form a major portion of the sap, the other contents are mineral elements and hormones.
