Literally, it doesn't affect the oxygen in N2( diatonic form) form which is mostly found in the nature but N(in mono atomic form) affects the oxygen and react with it to form NO2(nitrogen-dioxide) which is very harmful for atmosphere as plot dissolved in rain and cause acid rain which corrodes metallic buildings and all.
