The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an interconnected network of branching tubules and flattened sacs that extend throughout the entire cytosol in eukaryotic cells. It is the largest membrane-delineated intracellular compartment within eukaryotic cells, having a surface area up to 30 times that of the plasma membrane.
