Memory aided in human survival and reproduction since the days of hunter/gatherer caveman days.
FWIW, it’s not restricted to homo sapiens. Animals have it too.
If you are a hunter/gatherer and you found a productive fishing/hunting/gathering spot, it would give you a HUGE SURVIVAL advantage if you can RECALL THE LOCATION AGAIN later when you/your family/clan/village GOT HUNGRY LATER.
If you wanted to find/steal a mate, it would give one a HUGE ADVANTAGE if one can recall the basic habits of a potential mate or his/her family/husband(s) since otherwise, you might not get the mate or be injured/killed
