Answer:

A factor can be applied to an individual graded item which will allow that grade to weigh relatively higher or lower in the calculation of the grading category grade. This value defaults to 1.00 for all materials, so if this setting is not changed, all materials in a course will carry the same weight.

The factor for any graded item (assignments, tests/quizzes, discussions) multiplies the weight of the maximum point value by the number input in the factor field. For example:

If Test A has a maximum point value of 10 and a Factor of 1.0, and Test B has a maximum point value of 1 and a Factor of 10.0, then Test B is weighted 10x more than Test A such that a perfect score on each item is essentially worth the same.

That is, if the student scores zero on one assignment and the max points for the other assignment, the calculated total percentage would be 50% for the two tests.

Similarly, if Assignment A has a maximum point value of 10 and a Factor of 1.0, and Assignment B has a maximum point value of 10 and a Factor of 2.0, then Assignment B is weighted 2x more than Assignment A.

If the student receives a zero on Assignment A and the max points for Assignment B, the calculated total average would be 67%. However, if the student receives the max points for Assignment A and a zero for Assignment B, the calculated total average would be 33%, because Assignment B is worth 2x the points of Assignment A.

Note: If Factor is set to 0 for a specific material, the grade for that item is not used in calculating the category grade.

Where do I Find the Factor Feature?

The ability to add factors is located in the Grading options area of graded items (assignments, tests/quizzes, discussions). You'll see this option when creating an assignment, test/quiz, or discussion. For existing graded items, click on the gear to the right of the item, and select the option Edit to add factors. If you mark an item's Category as Mid-term/Final, it is not possible to apply a factor to that item.

Understanding How Factor is Calculated

Note: Schoology's grade passback to SIS only supports a factor of 1 for each assignment. The SIS calculates assignments with other factors in Schoology, as having a factor of 1. This means that if you are syncing grades to a SIS each assignment should have it's factor set to 1 to enable grades to calculate correctly across the SIS and Schoology.

The way in which factor is applied to the calculation of your students' grade depends on whether you have the grading category calculated by Total Points or Percentage. Click Grade Set Up to check how your Grading Category is calculated. Click on the name of the category and note whether it is Calculated By: Percentage or Total Points
