It is not possible to smoothly accelerate a material object to, or beyond, the speed of light. Apart from the fact that it would require an infinite amount of energy, it is also a topological impossibility: The nature of spacetime is such that the “inside of the light cone” (slower-than-light trajectories) and the “outside of the light cone” (faster-than-light trajectories) are not interchangeable.
