Glycolysis is the first step in the breakdown of glucose.
Glycolysis is used in cells that perform chemical tasks with and without oxygen (aerobic and anaerobic respectively). Glycolysis involves the formation of pyruvate, the initiator of the second step of cellular respiration (Krebs Cycle). Two net ATP and two NADPH are formed as a result of this reaction. Both ATP and NADPH are later used in the electron transport chain, which produces 32 ATP (ATP is chemical energy).
