If you think of deserts like Sahara or the Arab Peninsula, then people do notvreally live there. People live in the far more hospitable coastal areas, which are dry but not a true desert and where regular rains allowed some agricolture or animal rearing. Also, in the middle of these deserts there are wetter areas called oasis where people live on agricolture (sometimes oasis host pretty large cities). In the most barren plains people didn’t live at all: arabs and touaregh people traveled these plains stopping at oasis or on the coast.
