We can identify the valency through the electronic configuration of that element

hey dude! hope it is helpful for u....

electronic configuration is the formula for calculating the valency of a metal.

for example, magnesium (a metal).atomic number of magnesium is 12

so its electronic configuration will be 2,8,2.

since 2 electrons are present in the outermost shell it can easily donate 2 electrons i.e,it can loose 2 electrons forming a cation

therefore the valency formed by a metal is always a cation

in case of Mg its valency will be 2+.
