electronic configuration is the formula for calculating the valency of a metal.
for example, magnesium (a metal).atomic number of magnesium is 12
so its electronic configuration will be 2,8,2.
since 2 electrons are present in the outermost shell it can easily donate 2 electrons i.e,it can loose 2 electrons forming a cation
therefore the valency formed by a metal is always a cation
in case of Mg its valency will be 2+.
