y=6(hcp)
x=1/3×4=4/3

FORMULA=x:y
=4/3:6

XY3 .

Given:

Element 'y' forms hcp lattice & atoms of x occupy 1/3 rd of the octahedral voids.

To Find:

The formula of that compound.

Solution:

=) Y forms hcp lattice = 6atoms

=) X occupy 1/3octahedral voids.

Octahedral == n ( here value of n is :  6 )

Thus,

X = 1/3 x 6 = 2

Which gives us formula:  X2Y6

On simplifying we get: XY3

Hence, formula of that compound is : XY3.
