Gasoline (petrol) consists of a mix of hydrocarbons, but most of it ( somewhere around 90%) is octane. Octane molecules have eight carbon atoms in the formula C8H18. Other hydrocarbons in the mix are decane, hexane, and heptane, which have similar formulas with different numbers of carbon and hydrogen atoms. There are also small amounts of various chemical additives to enhance performance. Exact formulas depend on the brand, and are proprietary.
