Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin hailed MS Dhoni's exceptional leadership qualities and credited him for transforming Chennai Super Kings (CSK) under his captaincy. Ashwin had a breakthrough season for CSK under Dhoni in 2010 and there has been no looking back for the off-spinner since as he remains one of the best spinners in the country at the moment.
Ashwin spent seven seasons at CSK under Dhoni before moving to the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant - where he played under the veteran wicket-keeper batsman for two years. The off-spinner observed Dhoni's leadership from close quarters during his time in the dressing room with him in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Indian team.
Ashwin recently decoded why CSK have been mighty successful under Dhoni and how the veteran keeper-batsman is not just a great captain but a superb middle-order batsman who has been finishing games for the team right from the start in IPL. "I know a lot over the years, in terms of how CSK has come through, how MS has transformed the whole franchise and what it means to him," Ashwin told Harsha Bhogle on Cricbuzz live.
"For me, CSK is a team that was driven by MS' leadership traits. A lot of people talk about MS' leadership. My leadership in itself is what is going to come out of me having been a leader in the last couple of years," he added

CSK), MS Dhoni has also honed the skills of several national and international cricketers who have gone on to do well for their countries. One of them is R Ashwin. During his association with the franchise, Ashwin became Dhoni’s go-to man for the Yellow Brigade and produced several match-winning performances. Like every youngster, Ashwin too wanted to impress Dhoni during his initial days into the side.
While he did manage to make an impact on the likes of Matthew Hayden, Jacob Oram and Stephen Fleming, speaking to Harsha Bhogle for Cricbuzz, Ashwin recalled how he had to do his best to impress Dhoni. Ashwin also recalled the phase when he broke into the CSK side and how Dhoni used to clobber the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan for massive sixes.
"I would be waiting in the queue at the MA Chidambaram stadium where there was a net behind the stadium and one where they practice right next to the match turf. So MS and Suresh always batted at the center. Queuing up to bowl to them at the center was some sort of a yardstick. We didn’t always get to do that. But when I did that for the first time, I was bowling alongside Muttiah Muralitharan. Every time Murali bowled to MS, MS hit the ball long. MS of today is a lot more calculated but I have seen him back then where he used to whack every single ball and every time Murali dragged the length back, MS hit it farther. There were at least 5-6 balls that scaled the roof of the MA Chidambaram stadium. I hadn’t seen anybody hit the ball that far and that was every very new in that era. To hit sixes was something we weren’t taught as youngsters," Ashwin said.
Ashwin recalled that despite Dhoni hitting Muralitharan for sixes, he wasn't worried and told himself that he had a chance of playing ahead of the legendary off-spinner if he bowled better than him to Dhoni.
"I used to think if I bowl better, I would get to play ahead of Murali. It is just the way everyone wires themselves. And it’s not that I trained myself to be wired that way, but I never saw myself inferior to anyone walking into the side. That’s how it worked," Ashwin added.
Ashwin was a part of the Chennai Super Kings squad for a long time before he was put into the auction and was bought by Kings XI Punjab for Rs 7.6 crore. It was the end of an era for CSK as being the local boy, Ashwin was a core member of the Yellow Brigade.
