Answer:

The places where two bones join together are known as joints. Joints and bones are held together by ligaments.

There are three main joints in our body:

Fixed or immovable joints, freely movable joints, and slightly movable or cartilageneous joints

Immovable joints:

These joints do not allow any movement. Example:

  • Joints between the bones of skull
  • joints between the upper jaw and skull
  • Joints between the tooth sockets

Freely movable joints:

These joints allow free movements of bones in various directions. Example:

  • Joints of the knee
  • joints of the elbow
  • joints of the shoulder
  • joints of the neck
  • The four major types of freely movable joints are:
  1. Ball and socket

In, this joint, the circular surface of one bone fits into all directions. Example:Joint of shoulder

    2.Pivot

In this joint, the round surface of a bone fits into a ring surface of another bone. This joint helps one bone to rotate over another. Example:Joint of the head, joint of the neck.

    3.Hinge

this joint allows back and forth movement, similar to that of the hinge of a door. Example:Joints of elbow and knee

    4.Gliding

This joint helps the bone to glide over each other, providing a little movement in various directions. Example: Joints of ankles and wrists
