Introduction to the Autonomic Nervous System. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a part of the central nervous system, which controls visceral functions of the human body, e.g.blood pressure, gut motility, emptying the urinary bladder, regulation of body temperature, etc.

These regulations occur promptly. For example, change in ANS activity will result in a doubling of heart rate or blood pressure within seconds.
