In a ac generator, the conducting stationary brushes (carbon brushes) are kept pressed seperately on the two slip rings. the two rings are internally attached to the axle. the axle is mechanically rotated inside the magnetic field.
As the axle rotates, the brushes connected with it also rotates. the current in the external circuit flows from brush1 to brush2. thus for every half rotation the polarity of the current in the arms of the axle changes.
such a current which changes direction after equal intervals of time is alternating current.
