what is the function of dielectric in a capacitor

A dielectric is the electrically insulating material between the metallic plates of a capacitor. The polarization of the dielectric by the applied electric field increase s the capacitors surface charge for the given electric field strength and a capacitor is a device that used to collect charges so a dielectric just help that to do this easily.
