What is glycocalyx?
It is a protein cover that covers or surrounds some bacterial plasma membrane, epithelium etc.

Functions of glycocalyx :-

1)It protects the plasma membrane from getting damaged by providing cushion around it.

2)It helps bacteria to adhere to the living and inert surfaces.

3)It also forms capsule around bacteria.

4)It also protects our eye cornea to get infected.

5)It helps the sperms in recognizing and binding to the eggs.

Glycocalyx :

Glycocalyx is a glycoprotein covering that surrounds the cell membranes of some bacteria and other cells.


Functions of glycocalyx :

• The glycocalyx enables certain bacteria to adhere to environmental surfaces colonize, and resist flushing.


• It also enables certain bacteria to resist phagocytic engulfment by white blood cells in the body or protozoans in soil and water.

Example of Glycocalyx :
The slime on the outside of a fish.
