HCl (hydrochloric acid) is produced by the parietal/oxyntic cells of the gastric gland.

HCl has mainly two functions:

#
HCl helps in killing the germs/bacteria which tries to enter our body through food items.

HCl makes the food in out stomach acidic, because pepsin, an enzyme which digest protein can only act in an acidic condition,or in other words can only become active in acidic condition.
