HCL: converts the medium of food from alkali to acidic that also enables pepsin to do its work.

Mucus: protects the inner lining of the stomach from HCL.

Pepsin: helps in breaking down or digestion of protein in stomach.

Hydrochloric acid is helps in the functionality of pepsin at the same time kills bacteria and mucus.
