The Oviduct is the tube that links the ovary to the uterus and which the ovulated oocyte travels down to become fertilised by sperm present in the female tract. It is also refered to as the Fallopian tube, Uterine tube or Ovarian tube.

The fallopian tube also known as oviduct or salpinx consists of different parts (fimbriae, infundibulum, ampulla and the isthmus). The ampullary region of the duct is the site of fertilization. The duct transports the ovum to the uterus assisted by epithelium which are ciliated and columnar. This process is also enhanced by the smooth muscle present around the tube for its peristaltic movements (smooth muscles responsive to hormonal levels of estrogen). Tubal ligation is done for achieving sterilization as it prevents the tube to conduct the ova to the uterus.

As a part of the broad ligament, mesosalpinx may be considered as a supportive structure.

As the tube presents itself as a pathway of communication between the uterus and peritoneal cavity it bears importance in pathological conditions as blood, ascending infections, or pus can pass out of the tube to invade the abdominal cavity, with resultant pain, endometriosis, or pelvic infection.
