Protoplasm is composed of a mixture of small molecules such as ions, amino acids, monosaccharides and water, and macromolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, lipids and polysaccharides. In eukaryotes the protoplasm surrounding the cell nucleus is known as the cytoplasm and that inside the nucleus as the nucleoplasm.
The chemical reactions that are life itself operate in a very narrow range of conditions: saline fluid at a certain temperature of a precise pH and ionic balance full of lots of molecules close enough to bounce into each other so that all the chemical reactions of creating proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and more, and breaking them down, can happen.
