Resistance act in opposition that a substance offer to the flow of current.

IMHO just like the water tap control the flow of water, in the same way resistor can be used to control the flow of current in a circuit.
Let’s consider an example: We have to drive a led using 5 volt supply. We require series resistor since current requirement by led is very small ( in the order of mA).
Actually, it depends on the led, in our case we are assuming it to be 25 mA.
By Ohm’s Law: R = V / I ; 5000 mV / 25 mA which comes out to be 200 ohms
Apart from this, resistors are also used to reduce potential also known as potential divider.
