The function of salt glands in Marine birds is similar to humans, the gland filters out any excess salt found in urine. The reason they need those is due to the fact that in the ocean the salt water can enter a birds body from eating fish, or drinking. They produce sodium chloride as well to help digest food with seawater.

The Salt-Secreting Gland of Marine Birds. Marine birds possess salt-secreting nasal glands which produce hypertonic solutions of sodium chloride in response to osmotic loads such as ingestion of sea water.
