The follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is part of the two gonadotropins, FSH and LH. Gonadotropins are necessary for normal reproductive function in both males and females.

  • In women FSH stimulates the growth of an ovarian follicle. In the follicular phase FSH also stimulates estrogen production of the follicle. LH leads to ovulation and release of the egg at mid cycle (called ovulation).

  • here is a feedback loop between LH and FSH production and LH and FSH releasing hormones in the hypothalamus. This ensures stability of the gonadotropin hormone system.
