In lower invertebrates like arthropods, due to the absence of respiratory pigment in blood, the blood cannot carry oxygen to tissues. so these organisms have developed trachea to help in carrying oxygen to tissues directly with out the help of blood. or simply trachea helps in respiration.
The Wall of the trachea is made up of three layers. The outer basement membrane, middle one cell thick epithelium and inner called intima, which is made of cuticle. The intima is produced into spiral thickening called taenidia. These taenidia keep the tracheal always open and prevent it from collapsing.
