Solid , liquid and gases are categorized as matter as they have mass and occupy space.
All the matter is made up of small fundamental unit called Atom
" Atom is the smallest particles in matter"
As atom does not have independent existence , they combine with another atom to form molecule"
There are certain features which decide whether substances is solids, liquids and gases:

Solids :
Solids are rigid form of matter.
They have definite shape and volume.
Inter molecular force of attraction is more and particles of matter are arranged very close.
so, inter molecular space is very less.

Liquids:
Liquids are fluids form of matter .
They have definite volume but no definite shape. They take the shape of the container.
Particles of liquids are loosely packed. Inter molecular force is less than solids .
Inter Particle space is higher than solids.

Gases:
Gases are the fluid form of matter .
They have no definite shape and no fixed volume.
They have more inter molecular space and very less .
so, inter molecular space is more and they have very weak attraction force.
