RBI had issued Rs 10000 note in 1954 however all high denomination notes were taken out of circulation in 1978. Rs 500 & 1000 denomintion biyes were reintroduced in 1987 & 2000 respectively. As per RBI act, it can issue notes upto denomination of Rs 10000/- however coins are not minted by RBI but by GoI and RBI just acts as an issuer of coins. The coins are available in Rs 1,2,5 and 10 denomination and the right of deciding the denomination rests with GoI and not with RBI. So the maximum denomination issued in coins is Rs 10/- however commemorative coins of Rs 1000 have also been issued but the are not put into circulation but are for collection and are issued at premium not on face value.
