Explanation : Mahabaleshwar is one of the ancient cities of the state of Maharashtra. It was ruled by many kings, both Hindu and Muslim. The first mention of Mahabaleshwar goes back to 1215 when King Singhan of Deogiri paid a visit to Old Mahabaleshwar. He then built a little temple and a water tank at the base of the Krishna River. In 1350, the area was ruled by a Brahmin dynasty and was defeated in the 16th century by the Maratha family of Chandarao . The 17th century Shivaji Maharaj took over the region and constructed the Pratapgad fort to protect the city from the British. After he died, Mahabaleshwar came under the rule of the Peshwas. Later, the city went into the hands of the British who made it their summer capital. Many of the peaks are names of the British generals who discovered them. The present day or new Mahabaleshwar came into existence in the year 1829-30 and was originally called ‘Malcolm Peth” (Malcolm Ville).
