Answer:

The air is the medium which is necessary for the transmission of sound.

The sound needs a medium to propagate and air provides that medium.

Sound waves are created by help of the disturbances in the medium. The individual particles in the air are not transmitted with the wave, but actually the propagation of the wave is what causes the particles, i.e. (molecules of the air) oscillate about an equilibrium position.

The sound travels in the form of longitudinal wave in the medium. That is the energy is first passed on to the next molecule and then the molecule passes the energy to the subsequent molecule and this is how the transmission takes place inside of the air.

The speed of the sound in the air is 343 m/s and even greater in the liquids and the greatest in the solid.
