A landform can be both a geographic and geological feature. The nature of a landform determines its slope stability, permeability, whether it is prone to flooding, subject to tsunamis and ocean surge, likelihood of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, agricultural uses…. In fact, knowledge of landforms is critical for modern land use. If you live in a FEMA flood zone and don’t have federal flood insurance, don’t expect help if your house is destroyed in a flood. Same is true for earthquakes. Neither are covered by standard homeowner’s insurance. Houses along the Pacific coast use to fall into the sea because local governments didn’t bother to require geotechnical reports to determine landform stability. We know today that it’s foolish to build a house on a cliff unless the cliff is on a headland.
The study of landforms is called geomorphology and it’s complicated. However, one can generally reconstruct historical and prehistoric environments using geomorphological techniques.

Landforms, particularly volcanoes, are key sources of geothermal energy and so landforms, and the areas surrounding them, are often harnessed for electricity and hot water production. Another renewable energy source, wind power, can be harnessed using farms built in elevated areas.
