We should know the place we live in (its future ,past and thus understanding the pattern to check on the future and be ready)
As history repeats itself ,so thus the same scenario so if we know about the layers and its working ,we can take steps n precautions ,against any unwanted natural circumstances
it helps in understanding the history of earth and its creation,many fossil tells us about the habitat from history
For economic purpose it tells about where we can get fuel (Americans will be interested in this), and other natural resources
many many other reasons (earthquake ,soil survey, and what not...
P.S - i can keep on writing but am in office and my boss is looking at me
