Language and popular tradition are important components in the creation of a national identity. Language groups often become
synonymous with regional geographical identities i.e. the contiguous area where speakers of a particular language are found. Popular
tradition is also important as it reâects a shared cultural heritage and history. It signiáes a cultural unity among the people that lends itself more easily to the task of nation building as the population identiáes with each other.
