In human cells, there are 46 chromosomes. Before the genetic material can be distributed equally to both daughter nuclei, DNA needs to be replicated ( another exact copy has to be made ). Thus the replicated chromosomes appear as X-shaped structures where the sister chromatids are genetically identical.
